UV Printing on Gifts and Products: What You Should Know Before Ordering

Learn how UV printing is used on products and gifts, how to prepare the logo and test ink adhesion, and what to approve before printing a full quantity.

UV printing uses inks that harden when exposed to ultraviolet light during the printing process. It can be considered for adding logos and colored graphics to suitable products and gifts, but its success depends on the surface material, its coating, its shape and its compatibility with the machine and the ink. That is why an actual piece or a similar sample is reviewed before the quantity is approved.

Is printing suitable for every product

It is not enough for the surface to look flat. You need to know the material and the coating on it, the print area, the height of the product and how it is held inside the machine. Curved products or those with protrusions may need different preparation, and may not be suitable for direct printing with the available method. State the product name, its material and its dimensions, and send photos from several angles.

When a white ink layer is considered

When printing on a dark or transparent surface, a white layer may be used to support the colors, depending on how the machine is set up and the design. On clear acrylic, for example, the viewing direction and the order of the layers affect the final look. State whether you want a transparent area around the logo or a printed background, and do not leave this decision to assumption.

Preparing the logo and the file

Send the logo in high quality, preferably a vector file when available. State the actual print size, its position and the distance from the edges, and show variable text such as names or numbers. If color accuracy is part of the identity, discuss approving a printed sample; the result is affected by the surface color, how the file is prepared and the ink.

Adhesion testing before production

Ink adhesion may differ between two similar surfaces because of the type of material, the coating or the cleanliness of the surface. The need for surface preparation or an adhesion-promoting material is reviewed, then the sample is tested in a way that suits the use. A print that looks successful right after the piece comes out does not by itself prove it withstands friction or repeated cleaning.

What to say about the use

Tell the producer whether the product is for indoor or outdoor use, and whether it will be exposed to water, friction or cleaning agents. Do not assume the print resists every condition, and do not rely on food contact or sensitive use without suitable verification. The limits of use and care are set according to the product, the ink and the relevant tests.

Frequently asked questions

Is UV printing the same as laser engraving?

No; printing adds ink, while engraving treats the surface of the material in a different way.

Can different names be printed?

This can be studied with a final list and a defined area and position for each name.

Is a sample necessary?

It matters especially when trying a new material or coating, or when there is a specific requirement for color and adhesion.
